Ants are some of the most amazing, yet annoying insects on the planet. They are entertaining enough for people to keep them in a farm in their house, yet they can also ruin a picnic or destroy your food pantry.

The noun fly is a general term for any insect in the order Diptera. This includes several thousand species with considerable variation in appearance and behavior, all united by the fact that they have only a single pair of fully-developed wings, the lower wings being vestigial and used as an aid in balance rather than for flight.

Scurrying out of sight at the slightest light, cockroaches cause us both fear and revulsion. As houseguests, they are unwanted, and with good reason. Few of us can say why, but the revulsion they cause is alone enough reason to banish them.

Anyone living near boxelder trees is probably familiar with the distinctive black and red boxelder bug. These bugs are generally harmless but can become a nuisance when found in great numbers, particularly in late fall and early spring.

Most species of centipedes and millipedes in temperate regions are not poisonous and do not cause damage to humans or their homes, but a centipede or millipede infestation can be really unpleasant for the people living in the house for psychological reasons, namely, that people are disgusted and frightened by them.

According to the scientists who study these things, silverfish have never been the cause of any plague or epidemic. No evidence has been found that they transmit diseases to people. Though silverfish will visit and consume many foods that are not stored in insect-proof containers, the bacteria they harbor has not been found harmful to humans.

Mites are one of the most common and successful types of insects on the planet. The number of mite species is still being determined by acarologists, scientists who study ticks and mites. There is hardly an ecologic niche that does not host a thriving population of mites. They are tiny insects that have evolved a near infinite number of survival strategies.

Spiders are common occupants of homes. Usually, the low number of spiders in a house do not cause a problem, but many people are afraid of spiders. Most house spiders are completely harmless, but some species bite, and some spider species are poisonous to humans.

Springtails are insects in the order collembolan. Although they are in the insect class, being wingless having poor vision, they are more primitive than most insects. This leads some entomologists to believe they should have their own class, collembolan.

Ticks. Everyone who has ever lived in a temperate climate zone where tall grass and trees grow has dealt with ticks. These little pests are experts at sneaking on to your body and finding a free meal.
