FIRST CASE OF WEST NILE VIRUS REPORTED IN CLARK COUNTY

The Southern Nevada Health District reported last week they have seen the first case of West Nile Virus for this year – in 2014 there were only two reported cases.

West Nile Virus is spread through mosquito bites of infected mosquitoes that get the virus after feeding on infected birds. The symptoms of West Nile Virus include fever, headache, body aches, vomiting and sometimes swollen lymph glands or a body rash. The virus can lead to death.

A man in his fifties is the first human with West Nile and he has the more serious neuroinvasive form of the illness.

For 2015, the Southern Nevada Health District has reported West Nile positive mosquitoes collected in 22 local zip codes so far: 89011, 89012, 89014, 89025, 89027, 89029, 89031, 89074, 89107, 89113, 89117, 89118, 89119, 89123, 89128, 89129, 89130, 89131, 89134, 89143, 89146 and 89147.

Mosquitoes tend to gather at sources of standing water such as in birdbaths, flowerpots, grill covers and baby pools. Try to eliminate any standing water especially after a heavy rain.   It is advised to screen all windows and doors, repairing even the smallest holes that could serve as entry points for pests. Residents who are aware of green pools or stagnant water are encouraged to call code enforcement agencies.

Dr. Joe Iser, the county’s chief health officer stated “We encourage our residents to ‘fight the bite’ by using insect repellents, wearing protective clothing and limiting their outdoor activity at dusk and dawn when mosquitoes are most active.”
