A HOUSE MOUSE IS SCARY SIGHT IN YOUR HOUSE IN SOUTHERN NEVADA

One of the scariest sights in your home is seeing a house mouse scurrying across the room.  These small rodents have been traced back to be originally from Central Asia, Pakistan and Northern Iran.  There is evidence that the house mouse also lived in what today is Israel 12,000 years ago.

From there as people from these areas moved around the world the house mouse stowed away in grain supplies.  This mouse can be found throughout the planet from the frigid Arctic to all kinds of tropical areas. The house mouse is the number one rodent pest in most areas of the world.  In the United States there are two subspecies of the house mouse with Latin names - mus musculus domesticus and mus musculus brevirostris.

The adult house mouse can range in size from 5 to 8 inches and can be light brown to nearly black.  The field varieties of this mouse are dusky grey with the belly a lighter color.  The ears are distinctive as they are proportionally large compared to the body.  Most house mice weigh between .05 to 1.0 ounces.

Under the right circumstances the house mouse can reproduce all year long.  If the temperature is low there are fewer offspring and they might be smaller.  There is a gestation period of 18 to 21 days the female mouse produces a litter that be as small as 2 or as large as 13 – average litter is usually 5 or 6 offspring.  They are born very small (.02 to .03 ounces) blind and pink.  After a couple of weeks the coat starts growing in and the eyes and ears start opening.  By 21 days the young mouse can start taking short trips from the nest and can eat solid food.  The average life span depends on many factors however the average is 2 years.

The house mouse is a nibbler – they eat a little at a time but very frequently. They feed on just about anything and everything.  These mice are also known to be nocturnal animals.  Some of the common diseases carried by mice are salmonella, Hantavirus and leptospirosis.  If you think you might have an infestation call a licensed professional pest control company.
