YELLOWJACKETS AND HORNETS IN LAS VEGAS

Hornets and yellowjackets are considered part of the Vespidae family of wasps.  Both of these pests are known to build their nests in structures; however some yellowjackets have been known to build nests in the ground.  They live in colonies that can consist of up to thousands of individuals and would not be a threat to humans except for their proximity – building the nests where we live.

Yellowjackets also a subspecies of wasps come in two different groups – aerial and ground nesting.  The aerial yellowjacket builds its nest above ground in shrubs, trees and under eaves of homes.  The ground nesting yellowjackets build their colonies underground- however the western yellowjacket that lives in the western states including Nevada will also build their nests in attics and voids within the walls of structures.  They are identified by their black and yellow markings.

Yellowjackets also have the ability to sting you multiple times. If a yellow jacket stings you, it pierces your skin with its stinger and injects venom that causes sudden pain. You may also experience inflammation or redness around the sting a few hours after being stung. Fatigue, itching, and warmth around the injection site are also common symptoms for many people.  You should seek immediate medical attention if you feel these symptoms since you might be allergic to the venom.
