WINTER IS THE SEASON TO FIND RODENT INFESTATIONS IN YOUR HOME

Rodents are the most common pests to infest your home in the Las Vegas Valley during the winter months. Nearly one third of Americans, including those in Spring Valley and Henderson, have reported a rodent problem.

A survey was taken by the National Pest Management Association (NPMA) and found 45 percent of the homes with a rodent problem was during winter months. Missy Henriksen, vice president of public affairs for the NPMA, stated “rats and mice are commensal rodents and having been sharing our food and shelter for centuries, spreading disease, destroying food and property.” She suggested homeowners rodent proof their homes as soon as possible.

Mice and rats carry bacteria such as salmonella and transmit them through their droppings. They also trigger asthma and allergy attacks through a protein found in their urine. Other diseases that can be spread by rodents are murine typhus, infectious jaundice, Weil’s disease and rat-bite fever. Rats and mice are also known to damage property – they can chew through wood and can gnaw electrical wires causing electrical fires.

The NPMA suggests the following rodent-proofing tips:

1-   Inspect the outside of your home and seal any cracks with silicone caulk – look closely at the areas around utility pipes that enter your home.

2-   Use steel wool to fill any large gaps inside your home.

3-   Use screens on attic vents and openings to chimneys.

4-   Repair loose mortar and weather-stripping around windows and foundations.

5-   Keep your shrubbery trimmed to avoid pests nesting.
